A French Canadian man, Andre Thibeault and Chinese woman, Qiu Xie He, combine their multiple instrumental talents to create some very good instrumental music. I met them at the open mic event 'Beats on Broadway' where they played some really interesting relic instruments. The most frequently used instrumental piece of foriegn taste is the Pipa (Chinese Lute).
Qiu Xie He plays the pipa, which sounds somewhere in between a banjo and mandolin, to uncommon rhythm. The traditional instrument is not traditionaly used for fast picking but thats what she does and it sounds great.
I didn't want them to stop when they were on the show. It was hard to relinquish the programming for my taped content. It was the best instrumental performing to date. It was the Nov 28th episode and the third song of their set was a really intriguing rendition of Silent Night.
Silk Road is one of the more popular acts to appear on the show as yet. They are from Burnaby and tour far and wide. They are also popular in Asia where the French Canadian taste would be more exotic.
They are very active musicians, and this web site will testifty:http://www.silkroadmusic.ca/ |
